Abstract

Objective: In this study, we aimed to examine serum anti-neuronal antibodies in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cases and compare our findings with those obtained from sera of healthy cases. Method: Thirty-three SCLC and 25 healthy control cases were enrolled in our study. Anti-neuronal antibodies were screened by immunohistochemistry in serum samples obtained from these cases. Results: While anti-neuronal antibodies (all anti-nuclear) were detected in 7 (21.2%) SCLC cases, sera of 25 healthy control cases did not reveal any anti-nuclear antibodies. The difference between the patient and control groups was statistically significant. Discussion: Immunohistochemistry is a practical, rapid and reliable screening test for SCLC patients and might be useful in the determination of patients who need to be further examined with western blot technique.
