A survey of 500 mothers attending the Tepecik Hospital Children's Clinic was used for analyses of the conduct of mothers and their habits on breastfeeding and supplementation. It -was found in general that seventy nine percent (79 %) of the mothers were breastfeeding. And that between the ages of four 4 months to six 6 months only twenty eight point two percent (28.2%) were using only breastfeeding. Early initiation of supplementary feeding is a very important problem in our country. The production of milk was delayed in fifty eight percent (58%) of the women until several hours after childbirth Sixty three percent (63%) of those mothers whose milk came early used breastfeeding and fifty percent (50%) of this category managed to breastfeed through six (6) months of age. With infants from four (4) to six (6) months of age seventy two percent (72%) of the mothers ha started using supplementation, with rice pudding the supplement of choice. Our first aim was to determine the parameters related with succesfull breastfeeding such as the initiation of first nursing, exclusively breastfeeding, total breast feeding time. Our second aim was to investigate the effects of various epidemiologic factors on these parameters.

Bebeklerin anne sütü ve ek gıdalarla beslenmesine ilişkin, annelerin bilgi, tutum ve davranışları ile etkileyen faktörleri araştırmak amacıyla SSK Tepecik Eğitim Hastanesi Çocuk Polikliniğine başvuran 500 anneye anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Ülkemizde anne sütü ile beslenme açısından en önemli sorun ek gıdalara erken başlanılmasıdır. Anne sütü ile beslenme oranı genel olarak bebekler arasında % 79 olup, ilk 4-6 ay yalnız anne sütüyle beslenme oranı da % 28.2 olarak saptanmıştır.Annelerin bilgi düzeyleri araştırıldığında, % 58 oranındaki annenin kolostrumu gereksiz olarak nitelendirdiği ve anne sütü gelene kadar da sadece % 37 oranındaki annenin sabredip beklediği görülmüştür. Doğum sonrası ilk saatte emzirmeye başlayan annelerin % 63'ünün sütünün erken geldiği ve bu annelerin % 50'sinin bebeklerine altı ay süreyle anne sütü verebildikleri saptanmıştır. İlk 4-6 ay içinde erken ek gıdalara başlama oram % 72 olup, ilk sırada muhallebinin yer almakta olduğu gözlenmiştir. Çalışmamızda, anketle elde edilen verilere dayanılarak başarılı emzirme ile ilgili, "ilk emzirme zamanı, sadece anne sütü ile beslenme ve toplam anne sütü verme süresi" gibi parametrelerin saptanması ve bu sürelerin çeşitli epidemiyolojik faktörlerle nasıl etkilendiğinin irdelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
