Abstract

We present a case of neonatal pericardial tamponade due to umbilicalvenous catheterization, a rare, but life threatening complication.A newborn who developed sudden clinical deterioration at 44thhour following umbilical venous catheterization, is reported.Echocardiography showed marked pericardial effusion. Urgentpericardiocentesis was performed. Analysis of pericardial fluidrevealed high glucose level consistent with the composition oftotal parenteral nutrition fluid being infused through the catheter.Pericardial tamponade should be considered in any infant witha central venous catheter who suddenly deteriorates and urgentpericardiocentesis should be attempted.

Özet

Umbilikal venöz kateterizasyon işlemi sonrasında gelişen nadirfakat yaşamı tehdit edici komplikasyonlardan biri perikardiyaltamponaddır. Yenidoğan bir bebekte umbilikal venöz kateterizasyonişlemi sonrasında ani klinik kötüleşme ile prezente olanperikardiyal tamponad olgusunu sunuyoruz. Ekokardiyografidegeniş perikardiyal effüzyon görülmüş ve acil perikardiyosentezyapılmıştır. Perikardiyal sıvı analizinde umbilikal kateterdengitmekte olan sıvı içeriğinin konsantrasyonunda glukozseviyesi bildirilmiştir. Perikardiyal tamponad, umbilikal venözkateterizasyon sonrasında ani klinik kötüleşme gösteren herhastada akla gelmelidir ve acil perikardiyosentez uygulanmalıdır.
