Abstract

Cutting vibration which is detrimental to the elements of mechanically rock and coal excavating machines is always required to be minimized. Assesment of cutting vibration is generally carried out through computer programs using "variance", a statistical term, being a measure of vibration. In some cases where uncertainties are encountered, the variance may not be fully suffice for a conclusive vibration analysis. The variogram function as widely employed in geostatistics may be considered to be helpful in such circumstances. This paper deals with investigations on the relative merits of "variance" and "variogram function" in computer assesment of cutting vibration. The results of an analysis carried out on an actual shearer drum implied that the variogram function may, to a certain extent, prove to be useful in this aspect, though comprehensive studies were recommended.
