Abstract

Hydroxyapatite and brushite are calcium phosphate (Ca-P) based bioceramics and mostly applied in clinics for making artificial bone due to its biocompatibility to be used in various prosthesis, treating cracks and fractures in the bone and coating of metallic biomaterials. In this study, mechanical properties of Ca-P coatings on Ti6Al4V implant materials produced by biomimetic method were investigated. In this context, thin and continuous Ca-P coatings were first deposited onto Ti6Al4V implant plates by immersion in 1, 1.5 and 3 times concentrated simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37°C for 30 days at pH=7.4. The Ca-P layers were formed in the range of 6.5 and 18 μm thick. Prior to measurement of mechanical properties, the obtained coatings were characterized by XRD, optical microscope and SEM. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that Ca-P coatings were deposited on Ti-based substrates using the biomimetic approach. It was found that the coating structure was affected by solution concentrations. Surface roughness and dynamic microhardness of Ca-P coating and substrate were measured by surface roughness and ultra dynamic microhardness testers. Adhesion properties of the coatings were evaluated by using tensile, shear and scratch testers. It was found that the maximum adhesion strength was obtained in 1 SBF solution concentration coated specimens. Adhesion strength was affected by coating thickness depending on SBF concentration and surface roughness of the coatings considerably.
