Abstract

Nowadays, tax revenues and financial development are two important factors affecting economic policies. With a developing financial system, countries can increase their tax revenues. Therefore, it is important to examine the relationships between the two variables. This study aims to examine the relationship between the total tax burden and financial development in Turkey covering the period 1965-2017. The results of the Fourier-Shin cointegration test indicate a long-run relationship between the two variables. The longterm coefficients obtained by the dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) estimator show that a 1% increase in financial development increases tax burden by 0,361%-%0,397%. Moreover, the Fourier-Granger causality test results imply that financial development and tax burden have bidirectional causal relationship. With all these results, it has been determined that financial development is an important factor for the increase in tax revenues.
