Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the emergency operations at Ankara Oncology Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, demographic properties, complaints and physical findings, laboratory and radiologic investigations of the patients operated under emergency conditions were reviewed retrospectively. Pre- and postoperative diagnosis, incision types and operations performed, amount of postoperative drainage, duration of anesthesia and hospitalization, antibiotic use and postoperative complications were evaluated. RESULTS: 371 patients were included in the study. Preoperative diagnosis was acute appendicitis in 294 patients (79.2%), peptic ulcer perforation in 29 (7.8%), incarcerated inguinal hernia in 15 (4%) and other diseases in 33 (8.9%) patients. Ileus was diagnosed in 10 patients (2.7%) while only three patients had trauma history. Complicated appendicitis rate was 17.7% and negative appendectomy was performed in 6.1% of the patients. Antibiotic prophylaxis was used in 282 (76%) patients. 23 patients (6.2%) had postoperative complications. No significant association between antibiotic prophylaxis and complications was encountered (p=0.8). Complication rate was higher in patients >50 years of age (13.9% vs. 5.4%) (p=0.06). Mean duration of hospitalization was 19.4±25.3 and 4.3±2.8 days in patients with and without complications respectively (p=0.009). CONCLUSION: Most of the emergency patients in our hospital had acute appendicitis and in contrast to other hospitals trauma patients were infrequently treated. Overall, emergency patients had similar age and gender distribution, were treated with similar complication rates compared to other emergency patients.
