Abstract

Objective: To detect prognostic value of C-reactive protein as a biochemical tumor marker in colorectal cancer patients. Material and Method: 38 colorectal cancer patients operated between November 2001-December 2002 were included in the study. Preoperative simultaneous serum CRP, CEA, CA19-9 levels were obtained in all patients. The patients with diagnosed inflammatory disease were excluded from the study. The relationship between CRP and clinicopathological prognostic parameters was investigated. Results: Seventeen female and 21 male patients with the mean age of 54±13 (min.23, max. 80) were included in the study. According to the primary tumor location; 7 cases were in ascending, 2 in transvers and 22 were in descending colon. Twenty-two of the patients underwent definitive operation, while the remaining were irresectable cases. CRP elevation were detected in 19 patients. There was a significant relationship between elevated CRP levels and CEA, CA 19-9 elevation and presence of ascites. Nonsignificant high CRP levels were detected in patients with hepatic metastases, serosal involvement and stage D. Conclusion: Larger series is needed to assess the value of CRP as a prognostic indicator in colorectal cancer.
