Abstract

Objective: Determination of whether there is any relationship between preterm labor, premature membrane rupture and lower urogenital tract infections. Material and Methods: Patients with preterm labor (group I, n:37) and premature membrane rupture (group II, n:42) who admitted to our clinic were enrolled into study. Women with term gestation were taken as control group (group III, n:20). Vaginal and urinary speciments were cultured for bacterial infections. Specimens, taken from lateral vaginal wall, were investigated for bacterial vaginosis, candidal and Trichomonas vaginalis infections. Vaginal pH was measured in all patients. Results: There was no statistical significant difference between three groups in terms of candidal and Trichomonas vaginalis infections. Bacterial vaginosis, pH and vaginal culture positivity had statistical significant higher ratio in both groups compared with control group. Urinary culture positivity ratio was significantly higher in preterm labor compared with control group whereas it was not significant in premature membrane rupture group. Conclusion: There is significant relationship between preterm labor and premature membrane rupture and, lower urogenital tract infections. So that it is very important to take consideration of even asymptomatic infections and try to treat them.
