Abstract

Objective: In this retrospective study the aim was to evaluate the risk factors and the diagnostic methods used for cases of ectopic pregnancies seen between the years 1996-2001. Material and Method: 31 cases with ectopic pregnancies that were diagnosed and treated in our clinic were evaluated according to risk factors, symptoms, physical examination findings, ultrasonography findings, pregnancy tests in urine and blood, findings of culdosentesis and operations. For statistical analysis SPSS was used. P<0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean age of the patients was 29.74±5.92, years, mean gravida was 3.83±1.98, mean parity 2.61± 1.74. The risk factors in the order of frequencies were the use of IUD (16.10%), previous abdomino-pelvic surgery (6.4%), previous PID (3.2%) and previous ectopic pregnancy (3.2%). The most common symptoms seen in patient were abdomino-pelvic pain (77.40%) and following that in the order of frequencies were vaginal bleeding (45.20%), bleeding with pain (35.50%), nause and vomiting (12.90%). Physical findings on presentation in the order of frequencies were abdominal tenderness (80.64%), vaginal bleeding (48.40%), cervical tenderness (45.20%), amorphous mass at the pouch of Douglas (41.93%). Predictive value of USG in the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was found as (92.59%) and for ßHCG measurement it was (92.85%). In 20 cases whom culdosentesis was performed positive results was observed in 13 patients (65%). Conclusion: The result of this study has shown that the most reliable methods for the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy is measurement of blood ßHCG and USG.
