Abstract

Objective: The efficacy of ondansentron and metoclopramide were evaluated for prophylactic treatment of nausea and vomiting in cesarean section patients under spinal anaesthesia. Materials and Methods: Sixty ASA physical status I-II parturients requiring cesarean section gave this consent and were randomly assigned into one of three treatments groups (n=20) according to a double-blind, placebo-controlled protocol. After umblical cord clamping, ondansentron 8 mgr (Group I), metoclopramide 10 mgr (Group II), 0.9% saline (Group III) were injected intravenously. Episodes of nausea and vomiting, resque antiemetic requirement and side effects were recorded. Results: The frequency of intraoperative nausea were 20.3%, 46% and 60% for group I, II and III respectively (p<0.05). The frequency of intraoperative vomiting 6%, 33%, 53% for group I, II and III respectively (p<0.05). The frequency of postoperative 24 hour period nausea were 23%, 48%, 69% for group I, II and III respectively (p<0.05) and vomiting were similiar between group I and II but significantly higher in group III (p<0.05). Resque antiemetic requirement were lower in group I than group II and group III (p<0.05). Side effects were not significantly amoung groups. Conclusion: In cesarean section under spinal anaesthesia, prophylactic ondansentron 8 mgr intravenously is more efficacious than metoclopramide 10 mgr intravenously or placebo in preventing nausea during first 24 hour postoperative period. However, there is no difference between ondansentron and metoclopramide in reducing frequency of vomiting postoperative period.
