Abstract

OBJECTIVE: It has been shown that L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway is present in the human and animal uterus and, its activation causes a substantial inhibition of both spontaneous and induced .uterine contractions invitro and invivo. In this study, the effect of L-arginine-nitric oxide system was investigated on oxytocin induced contractions in rat uterus during the differrent terms of gestation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effect of L-arginine on oxytocin induced contractions were measured by isotonic tension recording in uterine myometrial strips placed in organ bath with Thy rode solution, obtained from nonpregnant rats treated with estrogen and rats at midterm and late gestation. RESULTS: Oxytocin induced contractions were significantly inhibited by L-arjinine in uterus strips obtained from nonpregnant rats treated with estrogen and rats at midterm gestation compared with rats at late gestation (p< 0.05) CONCLUSION: It was concluded that inhibitory effect of L-arginin-nitric oxide system is responsible at least in part in the quiesence of myometrium during gestation and decrease at term. It was also effective on the inhibition of oxytocin induced conractions in myometrium at midterm but not at late gestation.
