Abstract

AIM: Our aim was to investigate the changes in bone metabolism in patients with newly diagnosed throtoxicosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 24 patients with newly diagnosed thyrotoxicosis (21 female and 3 male) and 16 healthy controls (all female) were involved in the study. Patients were administered propylthiouracyl. Bone mineral density, blood biochemistry, and urinary N-telopeptide levels were measured once in the controls, and before initiating and at the sixth month of propylthiouracyl. RESULTS: With treatment TSH, and bone mineral density of the femoral neck significantly increased, while serum ALP, ST3, ST4, and urinary N-telopeptide significantly decreased in the patients. CONCLUSIONS: Thyroid hormones lead to increase in urinary N-telopeptide levels by increasing bone resorption rate and decreasing bone mineral density. Besides normalization of carbonhydrate, lipid and protein meatbolisms, urinary N-telopeptide excretion also decreases along with the increase in bone mineral density.

Özet

AMAÇ: Bu çalışmadaki amacımız yeni tanı almış tirotoksikozlu hastalarda kemik metabolizmasında değişiklik olup olmadığını araştırmaktı. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Çalışmaya yeni tanı almış 24 tirotoksikozlu hasta (21 kadın, 3 erkek) ile 16 sağlıklı kişiden (tümü kadın) oluşan kontrol grubu alındı. Hastalara propiltiyourasil tedavisi verildi.
