Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to define the relationship between the presence of nephropathy and cardiovascular autonomie neuropathy (CVON) in diabetes mellitus. Material and Method: 50 diabetic patients (32 type 1,18 type 2 diabetes mellitus) were involved in the study. Fasting blood glucose, postprandial blood glucose, HbAIc, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycéride were measured. The patients' whom were assessed for retinopathy by indirect ophtalmoscope 24 hour urinary microalbumin levels were measured 300 mg/24 hour microalbuminuria level was assessed as diabetic nefropathy. CVON was assessed by five cardiovascular tests: resting heart rate, the average inspiratory-expiratory heart rate difference with six deep breaths, heart rate response to standing, systolic blood pressure fall to standing, and QTc time. Results: In 47 patients, at least one CVON test was positive. Nephropathy was found in 30 of 47 patients. 21 patients had background retinopathy, 10 had proliferative retinopathy. The prevalence of nephropathy was significantly higher in the patients who had postprandial glucose level over than 200 mg/dl (p<0.05). Both retinopathy and nephropathy was significantly related to disease duration (p<0.001). CVON was significantly related to nephropathy and retinopathy (p<0.01 ). Conclusion: The presence of nephropathy and retinopathy was positively correlated with diabetes age and they are significantly related to CVON.
