Abstract

AIM: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the western countries. Distribution of colorectal carsinoma on colonic segments is known to be changed in the recent decades. This change in the distribution is known to be towards proximal colonic segments. However there is no epidomiologic study on this subject in Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study 1771 patients operated for colorectal carcinoma between 1985-2001 at Surgery Deparment of Ankara University Medical Faculty were evaluated. Hospital recordings and patient files were investigated for age, sex, tumor localization and change in locazation by time for colorectal carcinoma. RESULTS: At the end of the study although limited to a localized segment a change in colorectal cancer localization has been detected. The number of left colon tumors was found to be rising while the number of rectum tumors was decreasing. CONCLUSION: Colorectal cancer distribution seems to be changed recently in our unit so multicenter trials must be conducted on this subject.
