Abstract

This case report presents a 57-years-old woman with brucellosis accompanied by pancytopenia. The fever, sweating and hepatosplenomegaly were present in this case, and bone marrow aspiration presented normocellular structure, all serial cells were present in biopsy but in a very limited area the lymphocytes were infiltrated. The titers of 1/40 for SAT and 2-ME tests and isolation of Brucella spp from the culture at the 10th day of nonspecific antibiotic treatment led to the diagnosis of acute brucellosis. The blood parameters of the case were completely recovered at the 10th day of treatment with rifampicine 1x600mg/day, doxycycline 2x100mg/day. In conclusion, we suggest that brucellosis should be primarily considered among the etiology of cases with pancytopenia in our country where the brucellosis is still endemic. Additionally, the chance of isolation of etiological agent from the blood cultures might be high in cases not receiving specific therapy.
