Abstract

OBJECTİVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of tobacco use and caffeine consumption in pregnancy to the fetus and placenta by measuring the body weights, head circumferences and the lengths of newborns, and also the weights and diameters of placentas. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 44 women who were not tobacco uses, consuming less than 300 mg/day caffeine, 19 women who were no tobacco users consuming more than 300 mg/day caffeine, totally 63; 43 women who were tobacco users consuming caffein less than 300 mg/day ,17 women who were also tobacco users consuming caffein more than 300 mg/day, totally 60, included to the study. Their newborns and placentas were investigated. The women not using tobacco but consuming more than 300 mg/day caffeine had statistically significant lower weights of newborns and placentas (p<0.05). However, there was no significant differrence between groups according to the body lenghts of newborns circumferences of heads and diameters of placenta. There was significant lower body weights of newborns and placentas in women using tobacco (p<0.05). There was no difference according to the diameters of placentas, body lengths and head circumferences in both groups . CONLUSİON: In conclusion, ıt is suggested that using tobacco in pregnancy must be prevented both for the health of newborns and mothers, and also caffein including drinkings like tea and coffe must be limited in pregnancy.
