Abstract

Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate to effect of using alfentanil with anesthetic induction agents on intraocular pressure (IOP), after trachéal intubation Material and Method: Forty, elective nonophtalmic surgery patients were divided into 2 groups. Alfentanil (Group A) and Placebo (Group P) patients were adminestered propofol 2mg/kg, vecuronium 0.1mg/kg intravenously. Alfentanil 20$\mu$g/kg was given in group A and saline in Group P after induction agents. Intraocular pressures were measured before induction (basal values), before intubation and at the 1st, 2nd, 5th min of intubation. In addition mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded. Results: All IOP values of the Group A were lower than basal IOP values. In Group P only the 5th min IOP values were lower than basal IOP value. While MAP measurments between basal values and all measurements were decreased in Group A, compared to basal MAP values, in group P MAP values were found decrease only the measurements were obtained after induction and 2nd and 5th minute of intubation. In group A patients heart rate measurements were found to decrease after induction and 5th minute of intubation. In group P 1st, 2nd and 5th minute measurments were found increased. Conclusion: We concluded that the increase of IOP after trachéal intubation was prevented using alfentanil during induction.
