Abstract

Objective: Although leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of the esophagus, it is a rare neoplasm. Benign tumors of the esophagus is less than 10% and 4% of them are leiomyomas. After the diagnosis of the leiomyomas, surgical procedure is the only definitive treatment modality. Enucleation of esophageal leiomyoma is a safe and effective procedure. Herein we report leiomyomas presenting with dysphagia and treated with transthoracic or transhiatal enucleation or resection of distal esophagus without any complication between the periods of 2000 and 2004. Material and Methods: Prospectively collected data of 5 patients treated in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Türkiye Yüksek Ihtisas Teaching and Research Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. Results: In this series median age of 3 male and 2 female patients was 49.6 (38-65). In 4 patients tumor was located in distal 1/3 of esophagus, in one patient it was located in middle 1/3 of esophagus. One of the patients had previous laparoscopic Nissen procedure. 3 patients were treated with transthoracic enucleation, one patient was treated with transhiatal enucleation. One patient treated with distal esophageal resection and esophagogastrostomy. Median postoperative hospital stay was 9±3 days and postoperative outpatient follow up was 9-45 months. Conclusion: Leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of the esophagus, due to the risk of malignant transformation and it must be treated with surgical methods when presents with symptoms.
