Abstract

The current research aims to find out the extent to which psychologicial counselor candidates’ attachment styles, empathy, and emotion regulation predict their gender roles. A total of 335 psychological counselor candidates, 204 of whom were women (60.9%) and 131 were men (39.1%), participated in this study at Adıyaman University. In this study, Emotion Regulation Scale, Experiences in Close RelationshipsRevised, Basic Empathy Scale, and Gender Attitude Role Scale was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and Standard multiple linear regression tests were used in the data analysis. SPSS 22.0 was used in analysis of data. It was seen that there regression model that tested gender roles’ attachment styles, empathy, and emotion regulation predicted 17 % of the total variance in the study and it is found to be significant. At the same time, the subdimensions of attachment styles, avoidant attachment and anxious attachment; cognitive and emotional empathy with empathy sub-dimensions significantly predicts gender roles. However, emotion suppression fromt the subscales of emotion regulation significantly predicts gender roles but emotional reappraisal dimension does not significantly predict gender roles. These results are discussed in the light of relevant literature and suggestions are presented for researchers.
