Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the strategies music education programs students attending universities in Turkey use while practicing and learning music on their instruments. These strategies are attention, rehearsal, elaboration, articulation-organization and comprehension monitoring strategies. The study group was made up of 273 students attending undergraduate music education programs in four different universities’ education faculties in Turkey during the 2015-2016 academic years. These universities were Dokuz Eylül University (n=80, 29.3%), Marmara University (n=15, 5.5%), On Dokuz Mayıs University (n=83, 30.4%) and Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University (n=95, 34.8%). The data was collected through the use of Personal Information Form and the Scale for Strategies Used during the Practice and Learning of Instrumental Music. The findings indicate that rehearsal strategy levels of the students were higher than the levels of other strategies. Articulation-organization strategy levels of the students were significantly lower than the levels of other strategies. Furthermore, the results show that students’ practice and learning strategies levels significantly differ according to sex, age, experience on the instrument, practice time on the instrument, the manner in which they plan practice time on the instrument, element motivating them to play instrument, perceived level of self-efficacy on the instrument and academic achievement level on the instrument.
