Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine epistemological beliefs of 5th and 6th graders and, to investigate those beliefs in accordance with grade, gender, and sources of gathering scientific knowledge factors. In this regard, data gathering instrument composed of two parts has been applied to 320 participants from two middle schools in Burdur. In the first part of the instrument was comprised of demographics (grade level, gender), state of checking the accuracy of information obtained through Web, and frequency of using Web tools. In the second part of the instrument "Scientific Epistemological Beliefs" scale adopted from the study of Elder (1999) to Turkish by Acat, Tüken and Karadağ (2010) was used. The scale has 25 items within five subdomains. The higher scores gained from analyzed data indicates sophistic scientific epistemological belief. In this study, gaining high score in the process of knowledge creation, reasoning and changeability of scientific knowledge domains, and moderate score in authority and certainty and the source of knowledge domains suggested that the sample had sophistic epistemological beliefs
