Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the opinions of Science Teaching students about “howmathematical skills influence achievement in science” and about “mathematical knowledge “or“Mathematics course”. The scanning model was employed in the study. The study group consists of 345students enrolled in the Elementary Education Science Teaching program of a Faculty of Education locatedin a medium-sized city of the Eastern Anatolian Region. Data were collected using the Information GatheringForm (IGF) that consists of three open-ended questions and analyzed in a descriptive style. The results showthat a great majority of Science Teaching students think that a student with high mathematical knowledgewill also succeed in science and nearly half of all students would like to obtain mathematical knowledge asmuch as an elementary education mathematics teaching student does. These students believe thatmathematics will be helpful throughout their lives and it will help them succeed in exams such as KPSS. Inthis respect, is offered mathematics courses in curricula without more than necessary details might be usefulfor students who want to learn mathematics
