Abstract

Objectives: We investigated mucociliary clearance (MC) time before and after surgery in patients with nasal obstruction due to septal deviation. Patients and Methods: Mucociliary clearance was measured with the use of the saccharin test in 32 patients (10 females, 22 males; mean age 25 years; range 18 to 41 years) with nasal obstruction due to nasal septal deviation and in a control group of 30 healthy volunteers (13 females, 17 males; mean age 28 years; range 18 to 45 years) without nasal obstruction. The tests were performed a day before and three months after the operation in the patient group. Resultsrffis mean lengths of MC were 9.5±1 min and 13±1 min in the patient group before and after surgery, respectively, and 11.5±0.6 min in the control group. No significant differences were found between the control and patient groups (p>0.05). However, compared to the pre-surgery level, the mean MC time significantly increased after surgery in the patient group (p<0.01). Conclusion: Our results showed that MC time is prolonged after septal surgery. Considering the effect of intranasal interventions on the duration of MC, it is recommended that surgery-associated injuries should be kept to minimum.
