Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine a) the serum sialic acid levels of Tuj sheep during in dry and colostrum period and b) the serum and milk sialic acid levels during lactation period. Twenty healthy Tuj Ewes in the age group between 2 and 3 years, kept in similar breeding and feeding conditions were the subjects for this study. Ewes were obtained from Kafkas University, Veterinary Faculty Research and Practice Farm. There was no statisticaly significance in total sialic acid (TSA) levels between study periods. Dry period serum lipid bound sialic acid (LSA) levels was the highest in all groups and colostrum period sialic acid level was higher than lactation period (p<0.001). Lactation period serum protein bound sialic acid (PSA) levels was higher than both lactation and dry period (p<0.001). Colostrum period PSA levels were also statistically higher than dry period (p<0.001). Colostrum period milk TSA levels were statistically higher than that of the lactation period milk TSA (p<0.001). As a result, present study first time reports the changes in serum TSA, LSA, PSA and milk TSA levels of Tuj sheep that commonly bred in Kars region.
