Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to determine time length of uterine involution and the effect of subclinical hipocalcemia on uterine involution in Tuj breed sheep. Nineteen sheep diagnosed as advanced and single pregnancy with ultrasonographic examination were used. Blood samples were collected twice a week for four weeks before and four weeks after parturition to determine serum calcium, phoshorus and glucose concentrations. Diameters of previously gravid uterine horn were measured with transrectal ultrasongraphy 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days after lambing. Average diameter of previously gravid uterine horn in subclinical hypocalcemic sheep was 4.98+0.39; whereas, average diameter of previously gravid uterine horn in sheep with normal serum calcium concentrations was 4.02+0.19, and this difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). In this study, average time length for uterine involution was found 37 days, however, uterine involution time was prolonged up to 39-40 days in some subclinical hypocalcemic sheep. On the other hand, subclinical hypocalcemia did not have effect on uterine involution time at the end of postpartum period.
