Abstract

This study aims to draw attention to the fires that may be caused by the environmental factors rather than the fires damaging the physical integrity of the patient in the operating room and to raise the healthcare personnel’s awareness for taking necessary precautions. At the same time, the study provides data for training programmes to be implemented in this regard. The study was descriptive and conducted in the operating room of a training and research hospital. The study included a total of 222 individuals, including 115 physicians, 53 nurses, 37 anesthesia technicians and 17 cleaning staff. The data were collected with the questionnaire asking about their personal information, their knowledge of current situation in the operating room and of preventing fire. In the analysis of the data, frequency, Pearson Chi Square test were used. Based on the findings, despite the fact that all personnel knew how to use firefighting techniques and extinguishing equipment, the knowledge and awareness of the staff with a high level of education, concerning fire safety, the current situation and the precautions against fire is unsatisfactory. Although training related to fire safety was provided, it was ascertained that those personnel failed to pay careful attention to it.
