Abstract

AIM: We aimed to determine etiologic reasons of fecal incontinence in patients applying to our service between June 2003 and June 2008, with fecal incontinence symptoms and having a Wexner score of 8 or more, by history, physical examination and laboratory studies. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Fifty-eight patient (38 men and 20 female) were included in the study. The median age was 31 (20-78 years) for men and 54 (30-83 years) for women. Patients were evaluated according to Wexner Continence Grading Scale. Anal manometry and other diagnostic tests were performed to the patients, whom included the study after evaluation. FINDINGS: According to the Wexner Continence Grading Scale, the median score was determined as 12,4 (8-16) for men, and 11,3 (17-45) for women. In anal manometry studies, median anal canal resting pressure was determined as 30,4 (17-45) mmHg and median squeezing pressure as 62,8 (24-125) mmHg for men, while it was 28,4 (10-39) mmHg and 58,5 (30-105) mmHg, respectively for women. CONCLUSION: We determined that the most common cause of incontinence was obstetrical trauma in women and previous surgical procedures in men. In our study, the rate of fecal incontinence in women was lower than the literature. One of the reason might be the difficulties to declare their incontinence symptoms and the other might be the majority of patients, who admitted to our hospital, were military male personnel.
