Abstract

Aim: To evaluate hospitalized cases of herpes zoster in respect of demographic data, risk factors and complications. Material and Method: In this study, herpes zoster cases who admitted between November 2007 and April 2013 were assessed for demographic data such as age and gender, risk factors, clinical course and complications. Herpes zoster was clinically diagnosed. Findings: Twenty three patients were included in the study. 17 (73.91%) patients were male, the mean age was 64.08 years.(22-90). Twelve(52.18%) of them were 65 years or older. The most frequent risk factor was diabetes mellitus and the most frequent complication was bacterial superinfection. Conclusions: Early diagnosis and treatment of herpes zoster is important especially in diabetic and elderly patients due to high morbidity. Cases in high risk groups should be vaccinated.
