Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflections of the secondary mathematics student teachers’ usage of mathematical language on their limit teaching. The participants were four senior secondary mathematics student teachers (three females and one male) who are studying at the department of secondary school mathematics education. The data was obtained from the participants’ four hour lessons plans towards the limit concept, video recordings of these lessons, and the voice records of semi-structured interviews. The reflections of the participants’ usage of mathematical language on their limit teaching was handled with four categories named translating algebraic expression into verbal phrases, translating verbal phrases into algebraic expression, only use algebraic expression, and only use verbal phrases. The participants mostly used translating algebraic expression into verbal phrases during their lessons. The participants sometimes used mathematical language in a wrong way and similar usages were seen at their students. It is thought to be important giving the information about how to convert the algebraic expression into verbal phrase as well as giving algebraic expression when the limit concept is defined.
