Abstract

Purpose: Comparison of measurements of dynamic contour tonometry (DCT), and Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) corrected with central corneal thickness (CCT) in individuals with normal CCT. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six eyes of 43 patients that had no ocular or sysytemic disease were registered. Intraocular pressu- re measurements (IOP) were obtained with GAT and DCT. Only one eye of one patient and both eyes of ano other seven patients whose IOPs could not be measured at ideal quality with DCT were excluded. We analyzed the results obtained from 36 patients (16 (44%) women and 20 (56%) men). Mean age of the patients was 26.63±3.58 years. CCT was measured in all patients with ultraso- nic pachymetry. Patients were divided into three groups according to CCT values: lower than 520 μ (17 eyes), between 520 μ and 540 μ (34 eyes) and above 540 μ (20 eyes). Results: Mean CCT was 546.22±34.96 μ (range, 490 - 560 μ). The mean IOP measurement with GAT corrected with CCT, and with DCT was 15.58±3.30 mmHg and 16.14±3.52 mmHg, respec- tively. There was no statistically significant difference between the two measurements (p≥0.05). There was no significant difference between mean values of IOP measured with DCT and GATd in the group that CCT values lower than 520 μ in the group with CCT values between 520 μ and 540 μ. There was a statistically signifi- cant difference between mean values of IOP measured with GATd and DCT in the group with CCT above 540 μ. Conclusion: We emphasized that the new IOP measurement method, DCT, was not influenced by CCT. This study supports that IOP measurements with this new method are concordant with measu- rements of GAT, which is regarded as the standard IOP measure- ment method in individuals with normal CCT. CCT measurement is essential following IOP measurement. Measurements of GAT are most reliable in individuals with normal CCT. As CCT inc- reased we found significant differences between DCT measured values and GATd measured values. As CCT increased, there were higher values of DCT measurements. In patients whose CCT had changed due to previous refractive surgery, DCT is preferable. On the other hand, incoherent values and inability to obtain ideal measurements in some patients can be considered the main di- sadvantages of DCT.
