Abstract

A morphometric study on mandibular and dental growth in protein-energy malnourished rats during the lactation period Objective: In this study, we investigated the effect of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) on the growth of the mandible, third molar teeth in malnourished rats during the lactation period. Methods: 64 Wistar rats were used for the experiment; they were divided into two experimental (16x2) and four control (8x4) groups. Every subgroup of the experimental and control groups was fed by one mothermilk (Park method). Animals were sacrificed at 20 and 40 days of age. Morphometric measurements were done in the right mandible and left third molar tooth. Results: Experimental animals at both ages showed significant lower values in all measurements in comparison to the controls. Conclusion: The effect of PEM during the lactation period (newborn-20 days) was not only manifested during this period but it lasted up to the end of the postweaning period (21-40 days).
