Abstract

There have been numerous economic crises in Turkey which had small, big or general qualifications since the proclamation of the Republic. But from the 1980s on, crises occurred more frequently as Turkey opened economic borders. In 2000s, Turkey experienced first the crises of November 2000 and February 2001 and then 2008 global financial crisis hit real and financial sectors. After 2000 and 2001 crises, economic, social, juridical structures were renewed. Consequently, the economy together with the banking sector has progressed with more robust indicators during the 2008 crisis. In this study there is a panel analysis of Turkish Banking Sector during the 2001 and 2008 crisis using 1994-2011 data. We have found that Turkish Banking sector is competitive in all terms. And the increases in competitiveness cause positive and meaningful effect on income. Before the cri- sis period, the banking sector seems less competitive, and the variations in com- petitiveness coefficient lead a relatively smaller effect on income.
