Abstract

In this study, we aimed to determine bone mineral density (BMD) in male patients with a history of Idiopathic recurrent urolithiasis under 60 years old. Twenty seven male patients having normal blood and urine biochemical parameters were included in the study. The mean age of patients was 49.7 (34-60). Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was performed on lumber spine (L1-L4) and proximal femur (femoral neck, Ward's triangle) using total BMD and Z score. Results were compared with those obtained in 14 healthy, age-matched male controls without stone history. Lumber BMD, expressed as gr/cm2, were found to be lower in study group when compared to controls (0.91 $pm$ 0.08 versus 1.13 $pm$ 0.10 respectively, P< 0.01). The same significant decrease was seen in patient group when Z score of lumbar vertebra was taken into account (P< 0.01). We concluded that patients' vertebral bone loss and risk of osteopenia should be kept in mind in the management of idiopathic recurrent urolithiasis. We suggest that future prospective studies should be designed to probe the effect of specific Interventions with calcium, both dietary and supplemental, on urinary parameters and BMD.
