Abstract

defects such as spina bifida and meningomyelocel has been known as have a high incidence of perianal and sacrococygeal cutaneous problems, especially pilonidal sinus disease. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of spina bifida and lower vertebral deformities in the patients with pilonidal sinus disease. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed conventional lumbosacral graphics and lumbar CT scans of surgically treated 25 patients at our hospital between 2005 and 2012 with pilonidal sinus disease. There were 19 male (76.0 %) and 6 female (24.0 %) patients. The mean age were 29.0 ± 6.9 (14-42) in the males and 27.0 ± 8.3 in the females. Lumbosacral graphics and CT scans were re-evaluated both by radiologists and orthopedic surgeon, and patients detected with occult spina bifida (SBO) have been recorded. A total of 3 patients (12.0 %) with SBO was found. In two of these patients there was one level posterior fusion defect in the L-5 and S- 1, whereas both at L5 and S1 defects were detected in a patient. A a result, SBO prevalence was found as 12.0 % in retrospectively reviewed pilonidal sinus disease patients, which is assumed a relatively high ratio. This finding may be interpreted as both diseases may have common genetic factors in their etiopathogenesis. In the light of these findings, we may suggest that patients with pilonidal sinus disease should have taken lumbosacral graphics prior to their surgeries, to prevent possible further problems.
