Abstract

Crush syndrome is a systemic disorder which occurs secondary to rhabdomyolysis developing as a result of muscle trauma consisting of medical and surgical complications. Especially it is common in rescued victims under wreckage after earthquakes. Crush syndrome is the second most common cause of death in earthquakes after direct effect of the trauma. The most common causes of mortality are hyperkalemia, acute renal failure and infections. Gaining crucial skills of evaluation, management and treatment of the entrapped victim is necessary to ensure a successful outcome. Procedures to be followed before and during extrication, interventions on admission to hospital, follow-up at hospital after earthquakeare very important to reduce mortality. Initiation of treatment with non-potassium containing solutions (0.09% NaCl) as soon as (if possible under the rubble), early diagnosis and treatment of hyperkalemia, are primary approaches.
