Abstract

Akdeniz Eğitim Araştırmaları Dergisi, Sayı 31, Yıl 2020Mediterranean Journal of Educational Research, Issue 31, Year 2020546Investigation of High School Students’ Academic Stresses, Maths Anxieties and Attitudes Towards MathAbstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate high school student’s academic stresses, math anxieties and attitudes towards math in terms of various variables and relations among them. Correlational survey model is used in this study. 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students attending to high schools in Kadirli and Sumbas districts of Osmaniye city in 2017-2018 academic year constitute the population of the study. Total of 588 students who were chosen by using stratified sampling method constitute the sample of the study. As data collection tools, “Personal Information Form”, “Scale for Factors Causing Academic Stress”, “Scale for Graduation of Math Anxiety” and “ Scale of Attitude towards Math” were used. In accordance with the subpurposes of the research, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, LSD test, independent samples t-test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test, and correlation analysis were used to analyse data. At the end of the study it is determined that, girls’ general academic stresses and math anxieties are higher than boys; students’ general attitudes for maths aren’t influenced by gender; vocational high school students’ math anxieties and academical stresses are highest than of Anatolian high school and science high school students’ respectively; science high school students’ attitudes towards math are higher than of Anatolian high school and vocational high school students; 11th grade students’ general academic stresses and math anxities are lower than of students of other grades, but their attitudes towards math are more positive than of students of other grades; there is a medium level and positively meaningful correlation between the students’ academic stresses and math anxieties; there is a medium level and negative meaningful correlation between the maths anxieties and attitudes for maths; and there is a medium-level and negatively meaningful correlation between the academic stresses and attitudes for mat
