Abstract

Transnasal-transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary gland may increase morbidity related to the nose and paranasal sinuses. Nasal complications seen after this intervention necessitates otorhinolaryngologic follow-up postoperatively. Fifteen patients, operated due to hypophyseal tumor were evaluated with a questionnaire, anterior rhinoscopy, diagnostic nasal endoscopy and paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT). The most frequent symptoms were nasal obstruction (60%), nasal dryness (53%), nasal crusting (53%), headache (40%), postnasal drainage (40), rhinorrhea (26%) and epistaxis (20%) respectively. Septal perforation was encountered in 60% of patients and nasal synechiae was noted in 30% of patients. Sphenoid mucocele in one patient and chronic sinusitis in three patients were detected on PNSCT.
