Abstract

Objectives: The aim of the present study is to investigate results of the patients who underwent endoscopic surgery for antrochoanal polyps. Patients and Methods: Eighteen patients (11 males, 7 females; mean age: 31.1±14.7 years; range 11 to 65 years) were reviewed, retrospectively. All patients were evaluated by otolaryngological examination, endoscopic examination and computed tomography. The patients were followed up for postoperative complications and recurrence. The mean follow-up was 22.9±10.5 months (range; 9 to 40 months). Results: Antrochoanal polyps were found to originate from the right maxillary sinus in eleven patients and from the left maxillary sinus in seven patients. The most common symptoms were nasal obstruction and headache. Thirteen patients were operated under general anesthesia, while others were operated under local anesthesia. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and antral approach via fosse canine were performed in five patients; FESS and septoplasty were performed in 3 patients and FESS was performed in ten patients. There was a recurrence in one patient. Conclusions: The most suitable surgical technique for management of antrochoanal polyp is FESS due to low recurrence. Antral approach via fosse canine can be useful due to prevent recurrence when full evaluation of the maxillary sinus through ostium is not appropriate.
