Abstract

Objective: To evaluate retrospectively the relapse rates of epilepsy associated with antiepileptic drug withdrawal in epileptic children and to determine the risk factors effecting on seizure recurrence. Methods: Eigty-eight children with epilepsy who were seizure-free for at least 2 years were evaluated. Patients with recurrent seizure after drug withdrawal evaluated as a relapse group and seizure free patients evaluted as a remission group. Patients were followed for 2 years after antiepileptic drug withdrawal. Factors that may cause relapse were analyzed. Results: The study group consisted of 57% of the patients with relapse, and 43% patients with remission. Relapse was more frequently seen in patients with neurological deficits, symptomatic etiology of epilepsy, cases whose treatment period was less than two years, and those whose drugs were tapered within less than 3 months, patients with electroencephalographic findings were abnormal before remission, and those receiving politherapy. Conclusion: While tapering the antiepileptic drugs, history of neurological deficits, alındığı tarih: 06.01.2015 treatment period, drug tapering rate, electroencephalographic findings before remission, seizure type and number of drugs used are important guiding tools for us.
