Abstract

Scanners are an essential part of the digital photogrammetric systems. Although the development in direct digital acquisition have been enormous in the last decade, it can be seen that film-based systems are used in all fields of photogrammetry. However, direct digital acquisition of aerial photographs which aresone of the main data source in mapping applications, especially in the information-based studies is a new developing technology yet. Besides this, while Russian satellites mainly provide film-based images, USA companies which previously active in military applications want to launch film-based high-resolution commercial systems. Therefore, the digitisation of aerial and satellite photographs which are available and form an extensive archive is the main use of scanners at present. Some of the important applications that need for digital data are (i) the dijital ortho-image generation, (ii) the automatic Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) generation, (iii) update of digital feature databases and (iv) the integration of digital data, particularly DTMs, ortho-images and derived products, in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this study, basic working principles and geometric and radiometric characteristics of photogrammetric scanners which provide input data to the digital photogrammetric workstations were described. The results from the geometric tests of two examples of Zeiss SCAI scanners in different resolutions have been presented and the sources of the parameters that affect the accuracy have been discussed in detail.
