Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to asses the relationship between concha bullosa (CB) and septal deviation (SD). Materials and Methods: Two hundered patients with septal deviation who had undergone computed tomography (CT) scanning of the paranasal sinuses were examined for their SD angles and concha bullosa pneumatization index (CBPI) which is calculated from the ratio of CB area to orbital area. Results: The mean angle of deviation of 98 female and 102 male patients is 10.39±4.19. CB was found at 143 (71.5%) patients. As CBPI was 4.2±2.8 and 6.0±3.7 for ipsilateral and contralateral respectively, it was significantly higher for contralateral than ipsilateral (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between the angle of SD and presence of CB. If there is a bilateral CB, the area of contralateral CB is significantly larger than the ipsilateral according to deviation site. CBPI calculated from CT scans is an eligible and useful method for standardization.
