Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted for the purpose of examining prevalence of obesity and influencing factors in students studied at secondary school in Elazig city centre. Methods: In this study, that is descriptive cross-sectional type, 28 secondary schools were included in the scope from among 35 secondary schools that were located in Elazig city centre. Weight and height measurements were obtained and Body Mass Indexes - BMI [weight (in kg)/ height² (in m)] were calculated for each 2201 students. Because children BMI values vary according to age and gender, BMI (IOTF) values that recommended by International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and include 2-18-year-old over-weight and obesity limits were used. Students over the age of 18 were classified according to the BMI values used for adults. Obesity frequency and its affecting factors were evaluated with questionnaire form. Results: The mean age of students participated in the study was 16.30 ± 1.28 years and prevalence of obesity was found 13.5%. 13.2 % of obese student were male, 0.3% were female (p<0.05). It was not found significant correlation between BMI values and family income level, family education level, type of family. Most consumed foods were bagel, pastry and biscuits and it was found significant correlation between obesity and those (p<0.05). It was found significant correlation in favour of obesity between times spent in front of TV, times spent in front of computer, weekly consumption of milk and milk products, tea and coffee consumption, having breakfast and BMI values(p<0.05). Conclusion: Obesity frequency was found 13.5% in the group that was taken to the study. Education can be given to the students about healthy and balanced nutrition. Physical activity should be increased
