Abstract

Aspiration is a term used to describe inhalation of solid or liquid materials into the airways and lungs. The disturbance of the anatomical and functional integrity of the orofarinx and esophagus can predispose the patient to aspiration. As a radiocontrast media, barium sulphate is considered safe due to is nonabsorbable property, and is widely used for upper gastrointestinal examinations. Accidentally aspiration occurs frequently during these examinations and is likely to be silent. However, severe lung pathologies and death after barium sulphate aspiration have been reported. We present a case of ARDS following barium sulphate aspiration and discuss the predisposing factors-for aspiration, differential diagnosis and treatment of ARDS secondary to barrium sulphate aspiration.
