Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify early vancomycin-resistant enterococcal colonizations in risky patients in a second-level general intensive care unit in a secondary state hospital, to ensure that necessary isolation measures were taken and occurrence of serious infections was prevented. Methods: A total of 713 perirectal swabs taken from 344 patients between January 2012 and December 2013 were analyzed. Weekly Rectal swab samples obtained weekly from the inpatients were transplanted on the Stuart transport medium to the contracted microbiology laboratory. Blood agar and enterococci were then seeded onto agar media and evaluated after 24-48h of incubation. In the analysis of the data, binomial logistic regression analysis was performed using the SPSS 20.0 package program. Rectal colonization was detected in 4.36% of the patients after admission. Mean age of the patients in whom vancomycin-resistant enterococcal colonization was found was 64.5±21.03 years, and vancomycin-resistant enterococcal colonization developed after an average of 22.13±9.59 days after admission. Cardiopulmonary arrest promoted the development of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. It was determined that the number of days in the hospital affected the development of vancomycin-resistant enterococci and that the risk of colonization increased in patients with hospital stay of 11-30 days when compared with those hospitalized for 0-10 days. Results: As a result of this study, it has been thought that environmental contamination and colonized patients are important factors in the spread of vancomycin-resistant enterococci in hospitals Other factors that are effective in the development of vancomycin-resistant enterococci include prolonged hospital stay, diagnosis at hospital admission, and antibiotic use.
