Abstract

Introduction: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite widespread in the world and can cause infection in humans. Nearly one third of the world's population is thought to be infected with this factor. Although T. gondii infection is generally asymptomatic in healthy humans, congenital infection development can cause serious pathological effects in the resulting fetus and immunosuppressed patients. Feeding cats at home and consuming raw or undercooked meat are the leading risk factors. The risk of maternal-fetal contamination in pregnancy is approximately 30%. Determining the regional seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in pregnancies is useful for assessing the socio-economic costs of this infection and deciding whether it is necessary to define the screening program. Materials and Methods: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate anti-IgM, anti-IgG and anti-IgG-avidity levels of T. gondii of 15-49-year-old pregnant women admitted to Adana Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital between January 2014 and December 2016 and to obtain information about the seroprevalence rates in our region. 11313 pregnant serum samples were studied using the ELISA technique. The results obtained were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 23 program. Results: According to the analyzed results; anti-T. gondii IgG seropositivity was 46.3% (5233/11.313) and anti-T. gondii IgM seropositivity was 1.8% (200/11.313). Anti-T. gondii IgG 76 (0.7%) anti-T. gondii IgM 41 (0.3%) were found at the limit values in the sample. In total, seronegativity was determined as 52.9% (5982/11.313). Seventy-six samples were tested for anti-T. gondii IgG avidity, and 15 (19.7%) of them had low avidity, 51 (67.1%) high avidity and 10 (13.2%) limit values. In our study, it was seen that there was a significant increase in anti-T. gondii IgG seropositivity rates with the increase in age (p< 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in seropositivity rates between the ages (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Since the sociocultural habits and personal hygiene conditions constitute a risk factor in our region where seropositivity rates are high, it is suggested that routine screening activities should have been appropriate in the past, screening results must be analyzed carefully and necessary measures should be taken and activities for community education should be done. It is also necessary to increase the availability of anti-T. gondii IgG avidity testing and to ensure that infectious diseases are followed in our unit.
