Abstract

Gender-related differences of ocular biometric parameters in older ages The aim of this study is to evaluate the gender-related variations of ocular parameters in older than 40 years-old subjects. We recruited 242 eyes of 121 subjects who visited the department of ophthalmology. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured using IOL Master®, ultrasound pachymetry and Goldmann applanation tonometry. We enrolled 72 female and 49 male subjects and the mean age was 62 ± 12 and 61 ± 13 years, respectively. The mean AL was 23,18 ± 0,78 mm in female group and 23.68 ± 1.09 mm in male group (p<0.000). The mean ACD was 3.11 ± 0.33 mm and 3.19 ± 0.29 mm in female and male groups, respectively (p=0.024). Also, there was a statistically significant difference in IOP with the mean 16 ± 3.7 mmHg in female group and 15 ± 3.5 mmHg in male group (p=0.023). There was no significant difference between the groups in term of CCT. Some ocular parameters change with gender. Shorter AL, shallower anterior chamber and higher IOP are associated with female gender in older than 40 years-old subjects.
