Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relation between gender and disease activity criteria, functional status, and psychological status in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Methods: A total of 67 RA patients (41 female, 26 male) were included. Physical examination, routine blood analysis, and urinalysis were performed. Joint tenderness, pain, functional and psychological status were evaluated by the Ritchie Articular Index (RAI), visual analog scale (VAS), Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire-Turkish version (HAQ), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. Antero-posterior hand roentgenograms were taken and evaluated by a radiologist according to the modified Larsen method. Results: Parameters except mean CRP and HAQ scores were not statistically different between female and male patients. When female patients were evaluated, VAS-pain was correlated with ESR, CRP, HAQ, and BDI, while RAI was correlated with ESR, CRP, HAQ, and BDI. When male patients were evaluated, only VAS-pain and RAI parameters were both related with HAQ and BDI. Regression analysis revealed that the effect of gender on HAQ had lost its significance, the male factor continued to increase the CRP level significantly. Conclusion: As a result, the functional status evaluated by HAQ and mean CRP values showed significant differences between female and male RA patients. Further studies performed on larger patient groups are needed in order to evaluate the influence of gender on functional and psychological status and disease severity of RA patients.
