Abstract

The production and foreign trade structure of the global economy has entered into an extensive process of conversion since the 1980s and that conversion has accelerated even further in the 2000s. As the economies with a relatively lower production cost have integrated into the global system; the process has changed the specialization structure among countries and increased both competitive pressure and potential profit opportunities with expanding market scale. Countries like Turkey, where unskilled labor is intense and which are specialized in low-value-added products, are able to integrate more strongly into vertical specialization structures formed by companies in developed countries and they also have the opportunity to get into foreign markets more strongly as the sub-suppliers of global buyers. In this study, it was tried to determine the total and industrial vertical specialization tendency by considering the international trade carried out by Turkey in the period between 2005 and 2017. The findings show that there has been a modest increase in the total vertical specialization level of Turkey from 2005 to 2017. It was determined that industries with the highest margin of vertical specialization were “Metal and Metallic Goods” and “Coking Coal, Refined Petroleum Products and Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing”, which also have a higher imported input dependency.
