Abstract

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a medical emergency that occurs as a result of uncontrolled sympathetic activity which is usually triggered by a sensory input in spinal cord- injured individuals with lesions at T6 andabove. It is characterised by severe paroxysmal hypertension with clinical symptoms like pounding headache, profuse sweating, flushing. It can be successfully managed with early recognition of the symptoms, reversal oftriggering factors along with prompt administration of pharmacological treatment. However delayed diagnosismay result in stroke, seizures or even death. In this review clinical symptoms, aetiology, pathophysiology, acutemanagement and prophylaxis of AD are discussed.
